Turn on "Button Edit" mode. Next, click on a button that you want to assign a pet action to. Go to the click action you want to modify (left, middle, or right) and click its dropdown menu. Near the bottom of the list, you'll find "Pet Action Buttons" and it will expand to let you assign action button #1 - #10 of the pet bar to that click action of the button. Most people just set up 10 buttons to have the left click action be "Pet Action Button 1" through "Pet Action Button 10" ... although some variations in the wild have had Pet Action Button 1-3 on the first button, 4-8 on the next couple, and 9-10 on the last button. That's the best I can do for hunters/warlocks right now

One thing I've noted with the pet buttons is that (AFAIK) you cannot do an action similar to right-clicking the pet buttons to toggle the 'auto' functionality of the warlock and hunter pet abilities. Am I missing something here Moongaze?

Nope, you're not missing anything. That feature, sadly, doesn't exist with how the buttons work at this time. I'm still trying to figure out a good way of doing it. I think the toggle only really works on pet action button 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 (?)... since 1-3 and 9-10 (or 8-10?) are for attack modes and follow modes. With that said, I might be able to add a button type called "Toggle left-click pet action" which, if added to the middle or right click of a button, will toggle whatever pet action that is on the left-click to on or off, if applicable. ... but even then, I don't know how much success I'll have at setting it up that way We'll see...

the WoW pet bar is not static. all buttons can be moved around and huners f.ex. can have a pet whith 5 "spells" (you cannot remove the 'comand' type actions but some hunter pets can learn more abilties than they can use at the same time (ex.: a cat can learn cower, growl, claw, dash, prowl and bite...) but there are only room for 4 on the pet bar.)
