So, right now I have a situation. My laptop is overheating like hell itself is acting like my desk. I've tried to impliment several cooling solutions and they have all failed. With my particular model of laptop, there happens to be a little gap of air between the GPU and the heatsink on top of it (stupid design, omg). So, I need to use a thermal pad of some sort. Well, the pad, when you take the heatsink off, is non-reusable, so I don't have another pad. I used some ArcticSilver 5 thermal paste on this bad boy a while ago, and it worked wonders ... until 3-4 months later when the laptop started to overheat again. I reapplied the AS5 and it didn't work. So, I did more research and decided that I needed to put something between the GPU and the heatsink (a thin copper sheet) to help pass on the heat. So, I went out looking for one and failed. I decided to pop on a very thick layer of AS5 this time, and it appears to be working. It would normally reboot the computer after 5 minutes of WOW, but it's at 10 minutes now and the CPU temp hasn't increased yet, so I'm assuming the AS5 application went smoothly.
I guess that over time, the AS5 melts or something a little bit and spreads out, eventually no longer touching the heatsink and GPU together in this particular heatsink setup. If this works, and WOW doesn't crash at all tonight, I'll be very happy and can continue working on LS ... and continue to reapply the AS5 every 3-4 months (which is no big deal)
If not, I might have to send in my laptop to get some kind of repair (read: crappy thermal pad), since I can't find a thermal pad ANYWHERE in Hawaii. *sigh*
