I doubt anyone has read "The Looking Glass Wars" by Frank Deddor. It's a re-telling, re-imagining, and pretty much re-write of the Wonderland universe. People have their Bourne books, Harry Potter books ... um, other books ... and I have my LGW books. The first book was released last year, and I was able to get a sneak copy at Comic-Con and get it signed by Beddor. There is also a comic being produced on his Hatter Madigan character ("Hatter M") which I'm liking, "story wise" ... but the art is not my favorite.
Anyway, he was at Comic-Con again this year and had advanced reading copies of the second book, "Seeing Redd." These haven't really gone through the first stage of editing, and I've seen a typo or two already, but I don't really care. It's the story I like, and it's a fun and easy read. The books clock in at around 350 pages, with 27 lines per page, and the font allows a max of about 10-15 words per line. Very large print, very quick and easy to read.
The author is the producer of "There's Something About Mary" and he's usually pretty much to-the-point with his descriptions of characters, locations, and the battle scenes that take place. Yes, battle scenes. This series is pretty much showing a war between the White Imagination (Alyss's parents and her kingdom) and Black Imagination (Alyss's aunt, Redd, along with her soldiers, the Cat [who is bad ass], and others). Betrayal, alliances made and shattered, it's great. It really is something else. The "Card Soldiers" use AD52s that shoot razor sharp cards, the soldiers are dealt out to battle like decks ... lots of fun usages of words.
And then there's Hatter Madigan, who's my favorite character and a bad-ass as well.
If anyone is looking for a simple read or a new universe to check out, I would recommend The Looking Glass Wars and then check out Seeing Red when it comes out in a few months. Don't expect "Lord of the Rings" styles storytelling, or crazy amounts of descriptions ... seriously ... it's a simple, fun ride. Nothing too complex. If you want complex and can ONLY HANDLE complex ... this might not be for you.

(No, I wasn't paid to do this, I just like the series and I want more people to be aware of it. =) )
